Eat for Less!

Moving away from home for the first time comes with many challenges. The biggest of those is how you can eat well without spending all your student loan very quickly! There's plenty of recipes out there to get you started in cooking up delicious tasty meals if you head over to google (meals like pasta bakes and stir fry are quick, simple and tasty) but this series of tips is all about how you can save money on food!

1 - Make A List

If you want to avoid impulse buying then make a list before you shop (the tasks app on your smartphone is great for this). This will help you plan your meals and avoid buying extra things you don't need.

2 - Avoid Convience Stores

Many university cities have a Tesco Metro on every corner (or below every block of student accommodation) however these can easily set you back a lot on your shopping. These mini supermarkets often only stock more expensive brands rather than budget ranges and can often have higher prices then the bigger stores. If you've got a bus pass for lectures or getting about town use it to go to a bigger supermarket...it'll save you money!

3 - Try Budget Ranges

Some people are put off supermarket basics ranges but some of these can be OK...why not try them first and upgrade next time if you're not impressed? (Note: basics cereal tastes like polystyrene so maybe don't buy that!)

4 - Reduced!

If you head to the supermarket near closing time you'll find lots of items reduced...this is a great way to save money...especially on fresh fruit and veg, bread and milk. Great if you're planning to eat them straight away or if you get into the habit of...

5 - Freezing!

There are loads of things you can freeze! Bread and milk can easily be frozen. If you cook too much of a meal you can freeze that for another day too (Note: never freeze rice). You can even freeze most fresh veg to use another day, just Google how! When it comes to defrosting things just make sure you allow time for them to defrost and if you're re-heating a frozen meal make sure it's piping hot throughout before eating.

6 - Try Shopping Locally

My final tip brings us full circle and is all about where you shop. We've been conditioned to thinking that supermarkets are always cheapest but that's not always true. If your town or city has a local market then it's worth checking out for your fresh fruit and vegetables and even meat. For example I can get 6 apples for £1 at my local market compared to £1.50 in the supermarket.
