10 family travel hacks to make your holidays easier

Take the hassle out of family holiday planning with these simple travel hacks guaranteed to save you time and money.

1. Get scanning

Scan your travel details, passports and travel insurance information and email them to yourself. It is so much easier to recover and replace documents if you can supply a copy of them to embassies and travel companies.

2. Savvy packing

Be a savvy packer and invest in vacuum storage travel bags to shrink pack clothes, saving valuable suitcase space in the process as they virtually halve the amount needed. Style individual outfits before you leave, packing each one in a separate bag for easy access when you get to your destination.

3. Sheets ahead

If you’re heading abroad in the car, pop a fitted sheet over the back seats to catch all crumbs and mess. At the end of the journey, simply whip away the sheet and you’ll have a surprisingly tidy area.

4. Wash and go

Stock up on a couple of tubes of travel-sized washing detergent so you can wash the odd thing along the way. Favourite T-shirts are worn a lot and a quick wash will keep them clean enough to be worn again without too much work.

5. Rent it

Did you know you can rent all that baby paraphernalia instead of having to pack it for your journey? Consider renting car seats, buggies, high chairs, cots and even bathing and changing gear when you get to your destination rather than taking it with you or trying to manage without it. Many travel companies can recommend local businesses that offer this service.

6. Bag it up

Zip-lock bags and dry bags come in a range of sizes and are ideal for keeping holiday items dry and clean. Invest in zip-lock transparent bags for keeping travel documents and passports clean and contained in one place – keep your travel itinerary on top so it is easy to read without having to open the bag. Fully waterproof nylon dry-bags are available from outdoor pursuit shops and ideal for storing valuables, cameras and mobile phones at the beach.

7. Ship your luggage

Why not travel without lugging all those heavy bags? Companies can ship your luggage for you – so you can avoid the stress of lugging huge bags around the airport with your children in tow. And the price can often be similar to those charged by budget airlines.

8. Child's play

Consider treating your child to an infant-style daypack and encourage them to pack their own favourite toys and books for the journey. Not only will it encourage them to take a select few, it will also give them a sense of their own baggage. Remember to include the favourite teddy or doll or the holiday will be spoilt before you’ve even set off!

9. Card over cash

Remember to take your Visa debit or credit card to pay for purchases, entry fees and meals out. Not only will it save time not buying currency before you go, you won’t have the worry of carrying large amounts of cash and if your wallet does get lost or stolen it is easier to arrange a replacement card than recuperate any lost notes.

10. Research

Do your research before you go – use the internet to track down chemists, medical centres, specialist shops or even restaurants that cater specifically for your family’s needs.
