Travel the world from your armchair

We like to see the world but obviously with 2 kids in tow and a limited budget we are restricted.

So I picked up a set of DVDs of Michael Palin’s travels, all second hand, from the internet for less than £10. (you can probably get them on Netflix or similar)

We have travelled:

Around the World in 80 days (5 ½ hours viewing)

Pole to Pole (6 ½ hours)

Full Circle (8 hours)

Himalaya (nearly 6 hours)

Sahara (nearly 4 hours)

30 hours of travelling for under £10 is a bargain in my book!

We have enjoyed theme nights, cooking Russian, Chinese and Indian food when he is travelling in these places. We even enjoyed Baked Alaska as Palin set off to go Full Circle.

How inventive can you be with your snacks?

These series were filmed in the late 80s and the 90s and they provide a fascinating glimpse into other countries and the recent past. And travel without mobile phones!

Palin talks to local people and Ex-Pat Brits as he travels by boats, trains, buses, and cars; air travel is avoided where possible. In Pole to Pole he travels through history, visiting Russia and the Ukraine days before the coup which ended the USSR and through Africa avoiding civil wars and into South Africa where Apartheid is ending. His characteristic humour runs throughout every series.

Our two teenagers have thoroughly enjoyed these journeys. It has been great family time; they always want to watch ‘one more episode’. My son even bought and read the original Jules Verne novel which inspired Palin’s first Journey

So why not get yourselves 30 hours of travel entertainment and some quality time together. See the world without the airport delays and stomach bugs!
