What is roaming?
Roaming is being able to use your phone outside the UK to make calls, receive texts and stay connected to the internet via data.
Can I turn roaming notifications on/off?
You sure can. If you’re using the giffgaff app, head to ‘account’, then ‘service settings’, hit ‘roaming’. Here you can toggle notifications on/off.
If you’re on our site, pop over to your dashboard, then head to ‘profile and settings.’ Once you’re here, just scroll down to ‘roaming’ where you can toggle notifications on and off.
How can I prevent accidental roaming?
You can set your phone to remain connected to an EU zone country’s network in its settings. We have a guide on how you can do this for both Android and iOS.
What’s not covered by my plan when roaming in the EU zone?
Special numbers and services (such as roaming charges, international calls, premium rate numbers and some 08 numbers) aren’t included in your plan. To use these you’ll need some credit, which you can add anytime here.

UK freephone 080 numbers are chargeable while overseas. But most companies will have an alternative +44 number you can call that will be included in your plan.
What if I need more data when roaming in the EU zone?
You can grab a travel data add-on in the giffgaff app, buy your next plan early if you’ve got less than 500MB of your plan’s data or roaming data remaining, or just add credit anytime on the giffgaff app or website. Sorted.
What is a travel data add-on?
These are a handy way to buy great-value data for your trip. In the giffgaff app you can buy add-ons for all EU countries and selected destinations (we call this the EU zone). They’re also available for China, Switzerland, Türkiye (Turkey) and the USA.
Do travel data add-ons expire?
Yes, they expire 30 days from the date of purchase.
Can I use a travel data add-on in multiple countries?
If you buy a travel data add-on for a country in the EU zone then it can be used in any EU zone destination.
If you buy a travel data add-on for China, Switzerland, Türkiye (Turkey) or the USA then it can only be used in the specific country it was bought for.
Which countries are included in ‘EU zone’?
All 27 EU member states are included as part of the giffgaff service plus 11 additional destinations. They are:
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, French Guiana, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Guadeloupe, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Martinique, Mayotte, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Reunion, Romania, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine.
Please note: Not all countries in Europe are included. Please check the country you’re visiting at the top of this page before you travel.
What if I can’t find the country I’m visiting?
That means you won’t be able to roam in that country, as we don’t have any roaming agreements in that destination. However, non-terrestrial networks may be available depending on your location.
What is a ‘non-terrestrial network’?
These are networks that operate in places such as aeroplanes, cruise ships and ferries. When they are available, the charges are; £1/min to make and receive calls, 30p/text and £5/MB of data.
